REAL TIME TRAFFIC MONITORING
Automatic Traffic Counters (ATC) support the development of an Integrated Transport System (ITS) by providing real-time traffic data to the government authorities and the public. This contributes to some of the following benefits:
- Improved Travel Experience (e.g. improving journey time reliability)
- Delivering Policy (providing information on Modal Shift from Cars to Public Transport and Bicycles/Pedestrian)
- Demonstrating Best Value (e.g. revenue saving by improved road safety and shared roadside equipment between agencies and partners)
- Reducing Accidents (KSI killed and serious injury reduction by better road policing)
- Improved Accessibility (SMS journey time...
SHADOW TOLLING
Shadow tolls are payments made by government to the private sector operator (concessionaire) of a road. The payments are based on the number and type (classification) of vehicles using the road. The main advantage of this system is that it eliminates the need for drivers to pay tolls directly and the associated toll collection costs.
A traffic counter classifier is used to measure the traffic volume by classification. The traffic counter connects to an inroad sensor array including loops and piezoelectric axle detection sensors.

JOURNEY TIME SYSTEM
The impact of traffic congestion on people’s quality of life imposes significant and increasing economic costs as identified in the Eddington Report and relates to other important priorities including air quality and climate change. Average Journey Time systems contribute to the evidence needed to show how well an authority is performing its network management duties.
Average Journey Time can be tracked over time to see how an authority is managing the road network, and how well it is managing the impact of changing demand for travel, and to assess the...
CONGESTION MONITORING & INCIDENT DETECTION
Traffic Congestion
Traffic Congestion seriously affects the economy, people’s quality of life and the environment. Traffic Managers aims are to cut congestion by influencing travel behavior and providing public access to information to help people make smarter travel choices.
One method to tackle congestion is to promote sustainable travel alternatives. The issue of sustainable travel and transport is high on most Government’s transport agenda.
To support these demands TDC offers various congestion monitoring systems including real time Traffic Counter Classifiers, Journey Time Measuring Systems and Non-Intrusive Detectors.

AIR QUALITY & ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
An Air Quality and Environmental Monitoring outstation is based on a typical Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) site. The system has been in developed in conjunction with the European project Eureka Logchain Footprint ∑!2486. The projects aim was to develop a method to relate the environmental footprint of a vehicle to the lifetime cost of maintaining the infrastructure and the environment.
TDC Systems were invited to develop a system capable of capturing such data in the UK. During the project four Footprint monitoring sites (FMS) were installed on roads in Europe, three...
