Traffic Congestion
Traffic Congestion seriously affects the economy, people’s quality of life and the environment. Traffic Managers aims are to cut congestion by influencing travel behavior and providing public access to information to help people make smarter travel choices.
One method to tackle congestion is to promote sustainable travel alternatives. The issue of sustainable travel and transport is high on most Government’s transport agenda.
To support these demands TDC offers various congestion monitoring systems including real time Traffic Counter Classifiers, Journey Time Measuring Systems and Non-Intrusive Detectors.
Incident Detection
Minimising the disruption that occurs when an incident takes place is central to providing an efficient and well-managed network.
TDC pro-active HI-TRAC® Traffic Counter Classifiers can monitor pre-programmed traffic information thresholds and generate ‘alarms’ when an incident occurs. The traffic counter communicates to the in-station system (via GPRS communications or alternative) the nature and cause of the incident. The in-station system can interface to a web based application (such as Drakewell C2 Web Software) to provide an internet based traffic event information system.
The event monitoring system comprises of four main components:
- In-station System
- Communications Medium (GPRS)
- Web Application (C2)
- Event Monitoring Traffic Counter (HI-TRAC EMU2)
Event Recognition
The traffic counter recognises when an event occurs. The counter generates an event based on pre-configured average speeds, on a lane-by-lane basis.
Two methods of speed variation can trigger an event:
- Pre-Defined Threshold Speed
- Background Historical Speed
